A Companion, hadith transmitter and reciter; appointed governor of Egypt by Mu'awiya in 44-47/664-667, a participant in the conquest of Egypt. He died in 58/678 and was buried in al-Qarafa al-Sughra. His tomb is an Ottoman-domed, active pilgrimage site; Silahdar Muhammad Pasha built a mosque beside it in 1066/1655. (Some online coordinates erroneously point to Mecca and no two correct independent sources were found, so location is unpinned.) (Sources: TDV 'Ukbe b. Âmir'; CULTNAT.)
