Founder of the Shadhiliyya order, born in the Ghumara region of northern Morocco (593/1196), one of the most influential masters of Islamic Sufism, a sharif of Hasani-Idrisi descent. He taught in Tunis and Alexandria, and died at Humaithra in Egypt's Red Sea desert while on pilgrimage. His tomb stands in the desert within a large mausoleum-mosque complex, a major pilgrimage site.
