Jamal al-Din Ushshaqi was born in Edirne and became known as the pir of the Cemaliyye branch of the Ushshaqiyye line of the Halveti order. He came to Istanbul in 1155/1742 and began his guidance activity, soon gathering a wide following. He served as sheikh at the Cemalizade (Savaklar) Lodge near Eğrikapı.
