Emîr Karatekin (Kara Tegin) was a commander among the emirs of Süleyman Şah who took Çankırı around 1074, opening the region to Turkish-Islamic rule, also remembered for conquering Kastamonu and Sinop. His tomb within Çankırı Castle, a simple Turkish-Islamic structure, is said to hold Karatekin Bey with his wife Meryem Hatun and two children.
