Umm Habiba, whose given name was Ramla bint Abi Sufyan, was the daughter of the Umayyad chief Abu Sufyan ibn Harb. She emigrated to Abyssinia with her first husband, Ubaydullah ibn Jahsh; when he converted to Christianity there and died, she remained steadfast in her faith, alone in a foreign land. The Prophet married her through the Negus of Abyssinia, who conducted the marriage contract and dowry on his behalf. Her steadfastness in religion and her respect for the Prophet, while her father Abu Sufyan was not yet a Muslim, are well known. She transmitted many hadiths. She died in Medina, most reliably in 44 AH (664 CE), and was buried in Jannat al-Baqi; some sources give 42 or 59 AH. The account that she died in Damascus while visiting her brother Muawiya is not accepted as accurate. Her grave, like the others in Baqi, is unmarked.
