Umm Kulthum bint Ali was the daughter of Ali ibn Abi Talib and Fatima al-Zahra, granddaughter of the Prophet Muhammad, and full sister of Hasan, Husayn, and Zaynab. According to Sunni sources she married Umar ibn al-Khattab (c. 17 AH), with whom she had Zayd and Ruqayya. After Umar's death she is reported to have married her cousins Awn ibn Ja'far and then Muhammad ibn Ja'far. Her marriage to Umar is accepted in Sunni sources and debated in Shia scholarship, and is therefore presented neutrally and from multiple viewpoints. She died in 41 AH (c. 661 CE) in Medina on the same day as her son Zayd; a single funeral prayer was held for mother and son, attended by Hasan and Husayn. She was buried in the Jannat al-Baqi cemetery. Although a grave attributed to her is said to exist in Damascus (Bab al-Saghir), academic sources hold that it belongs to a different person (Zaynab bint Ali, whose kunya was also Umm Kulthum, or another Umm Kulthum) and affirm that she was buried in Medina.
