Regarded as the eldest and pioneer of the nine saints (Walisongo) who spread Islam in Java; likely of Hadhrami/Persian origin, he reached East Java late in the 14th century and settled at Gresik, winning the people through trade, agriculture and compassionate guidance. He died 822/1419; his dated tombstone survives.
