Elder brother of Ali and cousin of the Prophet, he led the migration to Abyssinia. At the Battle of Mu'tah (8 AH) he carried the standard until both his arms were severed and he was martyred; he earned the epithet 'al-Tayyar' (the flier) from the promise that he would fly in Paradise with two wings.
