Born in 1872, the Indian-British barrister and scholar Abdullah Yusuf Ali is the author of 'The Holy Qur'an: Text, Translation and Commentary' (1934), one of the most widely read English translations and commentaries among English-speaking Muslims. He wrote numerous works on Islam.
