Saints and Tombs of Afyonkarahisar

Nureddin Sultan

A Horasan dervish buried in Sandıklı, said to have come from Khorasan in the era of Yunus Emre (13th–14th c.) and settled there. Regarded as the patron saint of the Sandıklı chickpea-roasters' guild; his tomb in the courtyard of Emirhisar village mosque is preserved in original form. Abdurrahim Karahisari

A 15th-century Turkish Sufi and poet, disciple and successor (khalifa) of Aksemseddin. His most important work is the Vahdetname (1460), a mystical-ethical poem of about 4,250 couplets; he also wrote Munyetu'l-ebrar and a Turkish rendering of al-Busiri's Qasida al-Burda. He died after 888/1483 and is buried in the tomb beside the Misri Mosque in central Afyonkarahisar, built by Kasim Pasha.

Divane Mehmed Chelebi (Sultan Divani)

A Mevlevi sheikh and divan poet, also known as Semai Mehmed Chelebi and a descendant of Mevlana. As postnishin of the Afyonkarahisar Mevlevi lodge he made the city the foremost center of the Mevlevi order after Konya, founding numerous lodges across Anatolia and beyond. He is buried in the Afyon Mevlevi lodge (his death is generally dated 936/1529).
