Syekh Quro, whose real name was Syekh Hasanuddin, was among the scholars who first brought Islam to the Karawang region, arriving from Champa in the 14th century. Tradition holds that in 1418 he founded a school called Pondok Quro ('a place to study the Quran'), and he is counted among the pioneering preachers who preceded the Wali Songo. His tomb is generally held to lie at Pulobata in Karawang (some hold it is near the Grand Mosque); the simple shrine at Pulobata is a long-established pilgrimage site in the region.
