Seyyid Vakkas is believed to have been martyred during the conquest of Giresun (traditionally 1461) and held to be a descendant of the Prophet. The present octagonal lead-domed mausoleum was commissioned in 1888 by district governor Mehmet Ali Bey of Rize and stands in the Kapu quarter of central Giresun, a major pilgrimage site.
