Mir-i Arab (Sayyid Mir Abdullah)

Sayyid · Mir · Shaykh

Checked by an editor
According to Iranica, Sayyid Mir Abdullah, the Sufi shaykh known as Mir-i Arab, came to Bukhara from Isfijab (Sayram) sometime after 921/1515 and in 942/1535-36 built the madrasa bearing his name across from the Masjid-i Kalan; the atlas records his grave within this madrasa, but the sources opened (Iranica, UNESCO 602) do not explicitly mention the grave.

Differing Scholarly Views

Common literature holds that Mir-i Arab is buried together with Ubaydullah Khan beneath the madrasa's northern dome. Sources: Iranica presents him as 'Sayyed Mīr ʿAbd-Allāh … a Sufi shaikh who came from Isfijab (Sayram)' and mentions the madrasa but neither the grave nor the nisba 'al-Yamani'; UNESCO 602 describes the historic centre of Bukhara without naming the madrasa. The atlas records this attribution in the sources' own words and passes no judgement.
