Abu al-Mughith al-Husayn ibn Mansur al-Hallaj (d. 309/922) is one of the most controversial and influential figures in Sufi history. Born around 858 in the Fars region of Iran (Tur/Bayda) and raised in Wasit, Tustar and Baghdad (TDV Encyclopedia of Islam, "Hallâc-ı Mansûr"), he became famous for the utterance "Ana al-Haqq" ("I am the Truth"), which provoked deep dispute among the scholars of his time. After a long trial he was executed in Baghdad (TDV; Wikidata Q172862). According to tradition his body was cremated and his ashes scattered in the Tigris, so no physical grave survives; the execution site and various commemorative maqams were later visited, and no definite burial location can be confirmed (transparency note).
