Diri Baba was a venerated Sufi hermit/mystic of the Shirvan region; local tradition held that his body remained incorrupt (the name means roughly 'living father'). The two-storey mausoleum is carved into a cliff face above Maraza, giving it a 'hanging' appearance, and is one of Azerbaijan's most significant monuments tied to medieval Sufism. The mausoleum is dated 1402 (c. 805 AH); an inscription names the Shirvanshah Ibrahim I. It became a place of pilgrimage from the 17th century onward.
