Datuk ri Tiro (real name Abdul Jawad, styled Khatib Bungsu) was one of the three preachers (Datuk Tellu) who came in the early 17th century from Koto Tangah in the Minangkabau region of Sumatra to South Sulawesi. Specialising in Sufism, he spread Islam in the Tiro and Bulukumba regions and is remembered for winning people to Islam through a mystical approach. Together with his companions Datuk ri Bandang (jurisprudence) and Datuk Patimang (theology), he Islamised the Gowa-Tallo courts in 1607, laying the foundations of Islam in the region. His tomb lies in the grave complex at Hila-Hila (Eka Tiro), Bontotiro district, Bulukumba, a registered cultural heritage site and place of pilgrimage.
