Hasan al-Basri (d. 110/728), born in Medina and settled in Basra, was one of the most eminent scholars and ascetics of the Tabi'un generation, having met some seventy Companions. An authority in Qur'anic exegesis, hadith and law, his sermons on renunciation made him the first great figure of Sufi history.
