The Al Nejashi Mosque in the village of Negash (Tigray) is associated with the First Hijra of the Prophet's Companions to Abyssinia (c. 614-615) and is among the earliest Muslim settlements in Africa; a 7th-century Muslim cemetery is archaeologically documented there.
