Akça Koca Bey was a frontier gazi and companion of Orhan Gazi in the founding era of the Ottoman state, key in the conquest of Kandıra and İzmit; the province of Kocaeli is named after him. He died near Kandıra in 1328 and was buried at Baba Tepesi. A tent-shaped monumental tomb was built in 1974.
