Zaynab bint Jahsh was the daughter of Umayma bint Abd al-Muttalib, the Prophet's aunt, making her the Prophet's cousin. She was first married to Zayd ibn Haritha, the Prophet's freedman and adopted son; when that marriage failed she was married to the Prophet by the verses of Surat al-Ahzab, a marriage tied to the ruling permitting marriage to a former wife of an adopted son and abolishing the institution of adoption. She was known for her devotion to worship, frequent fasting, working with her hands and giving her earnings in charity; Aisha praised her generosity and piety. She was the first of the Prophet's wives to die after him, passing in Medina in 20 AH (641 CE) during Umar's caliphate. Umar led her funeral prayer and she was buried in Jannat al-Baqi. Her grave, like the others in Baqi, is unmarked.
