Juwayriya bint al-Harith was the daughter of al-Harith ibn Abi Dirar, chief of the Banu Mustaliq tribe. Captured at the Battle of al-Muraysi (Banu Mustaliq), she came to the Prophet seeking help with her ransom; he paid it, freed her, and married her. On account of this marriage the Muslims released the Banu Mustaliq captives, now in-laws of the Prophet, so that some hundred households were drawn to Islam. Aisha said she was the most blessed of women for her people. She was known for her devotion to worship and abundant remembrance of God. Her name before marriage was Barra, which the Prophet changed to Juwayriya. She died in Medina, most reliably in Rabi al-Awwal of 56 AH (676 CE), with a report of 50 AH. The governor of Medina, Marwan ibn al-Hakam, led her funeral prayer and she was buried in Jannat al-Baqi. Her grave, like the others in Baqi, is unmarked.
