Abdullah ibn Abbas (d. 68/687-88), the cousin of the Prophet ﷺ and a member of the Ahl al-Bayt, was a Companion for whom the Prophet ﷺ prayed: "O Allah, grant him understanding of religion and teach him interpretation." For his depth in Qur'anic exegesis and jurisprudence he is honoured as "Interpreter of the Qur'an" and "Scholar of the Ummah." He lost his sight late in life and died at Ta'if at around seventy; his funeral prayer was led by Muhammad ibn al-Hanafiyyah. The Ibn Abbas Mosque was later built over his burial site and long formed the centre and symbol of Ta'if. The mosque is active and visitable today, with the grave within its precinct; the present structure was rebuilt in modern times.
