Shaykh Ma'ruf ibn Abdullah Ba Jammal al-Kindi (893/1488 – 969/1561) was born in Shibam and was among the leading Sufi guides of Hadramaut. He received the licence of guidance from Ibrahim ibn Abdullah Ba Harmuz in 928 AH; he trained over forty deputies, and great Sufis such as Abu Bakr ibn Salim drew spiritual benefit from him. No independent authored work of his is recorded. In 949 AH he moved from Shibam to Wadi Dawan, settled in the town of Bada and died there in 969 AH; a small dome was built over his grave and an annual ziyara in Dhu al-Hijja became established.
