Yusuf bin Ahmad al-Kawneyn, known as Aw-Barkhadle ('Blessed Father'), is regarded as a pioneer of Islam in the Horn of Africa, traditionally credited with devising an Arabic-script reading system for Somali; he is placed in the 10th-12th centuries (no firm death year is recorded). His shrine in the town of Aw-Barkhadle, northeast of Hargeisa, was a major medieval pilgrimage and royal-burial center.
