Masjid al-Tawbah marks the spot where the Prophet ﷺ prayed during the Expedition of Tabuk in 9 AH (630 CE), when he set out with an army of around thirty thousand. No fighting took place; the Prophet ﷺ stayed in Tabuk for about twenty days, and the mosque took its name from verses of Surah at-Tawbah revealed in this context. Locals also call it the "Prophet's Mosque" and, for its position, the "Castle Mosque." Its first permanent structure was built under the Umayyad caliph Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz. It stands in central Tabuk beside the historic Tabuk Castle and is open and visitable today.
Visiting Etiquette
An active mosque; observe prayer times, mosque etiquette and modest dress. The adjacent Tabuk Castle can also be visited; respect the historic fabric of the site.
