The Mosque of Al-Fadikh is a historic mosque about 1 km east of the Quba Mosque, at the edge of the valley (junction of Qurban St. and Al-Awali St.). It is also known as Masjid al-Shams (Mosque of the Sun) and Masjid Bani al-Nadir. Tradition holds that the Prophet prayed here during the siege of Banu Nadir and stayed several days. Its name 'al-Fadikh' (a fermented date drink) comes from companions pouring out their drink when the prohibition of wine was announced; some narrations place the prohibition verses' revelation here. IMPORTANT DISTINCTION: al-Fadikh, al-Shaykhayn and Bani Haritha are separate mosques (as Madain Project explicitly states); popular sources frequently conflate them and they must not be merged. The old structure was demolished around 2001 and the site is now in ruins. NOTE: the 'returning of the sun' (Radd al-Shams) miracle is a sectarian tradition and is presented neutrally.
Visiting Etiquette
The site is now in ruins; visitors should behave respectfully and not damage the remains. Do not confuse it with the al-Shaykhayn and Bani Haritha mosques. Neutral, respectful language is essential regarding sectarian narrations.
