Al-Jum'ah Mosque lies in southwestern Medina on Wadi Ranuna' within the historic territory of Banu Salim ibn Awf, on the Quba-to-Medina route, about 900 metres north of the Quba Mosque. It is also known as Masjid al-Wadi, Masjid Bani Salim and Masjid Atikah. Tradition holds that during the Hijrah, after leaving Quba for Medina, the Prophet led the first Friday (Jum'ah) prayer in Islam here in the land of Banu Salim with about one hundred Muslims (16 Rabi' al-Awwal, AH 1 / 622 CE), giving the mosque its name. The building has been repaired and enlarged repeatedly and today serves as a modest single-domed mosque. The first-Friday-prayer attribution rests on sira and tradition and is reported with hedging ('it is narrated').
Visiting Etiquette
An active mosque; voluntary prayers may be offered. Modest dress, quiet conduct and ablution are expected; it is commonly visited together with Quba. As the attribution is traditional, avoid excessive veneration.
