Masjid al-Arish stands at the northern part of the Badr battlefield, built on the spot where a palm-frond arbour (arish) was raised for the Prophet during the battle. According to reports, this arbour was built on a small hill at the suggestion of Sa'd ibn Mu'adh as the Prophet's command post, from which he directed the battle and supplicated. There the Messenger of Allah earnestly implored his Lord for victory, then descended to the field. In later times a small mosque was built to preserve the memory of the place, and today it is a standing historical landmark on the Badr visitation route. Badr lies roughly 130 km southwest of Medina.
